Another week of the Game Changers series, another set of African players making their presence felt across Europe’s top leagues. From the Bundesliga to the WSL, here is your roundup.
Ramy Bensebaini (Algeria) – Borussia Dortmund 4-0 SC Freiburg
Bensebaini was everywhere in Dortmund’s commanding win, delivering the kind of complete full-back performance that reminds you just how dangerous he is going forward. He had a hand in the opener early on, lifting a precise ball over the top that released Maximilian Beier to get Dortmund going. Then in the 31st minute, he got on the scoresheet himself, rising highest from a corner to power a header into the top corner and make it 3-0. By halftime the game was effectively done, and Bensebaini had already contributed a goal and an assist. He finished with over 60 passes and a clean sheet to his name, a thoroughly dominant afternoon.
Chiamaka Nnadozie (Nigeria) – Brighton & Hove Albion W.F.C. 3-2 Manchester City W.F.C.
Manchester City arrived at the Amex knowing a win could seal their first WSL title since 2016. Chiamaka Nnadozie had other ideas. The Nigerian goalkeeper made four saves on the night — all from inside the penalty area — and was commanding throughout, claiming crosses, punching clear under pressure, and producing a crucial sweeping intervention behind her defensive line when City threatened to extend their lead. She conceded twice, including a late consolation from Khadija Shaw, but her contributions were central to keeping Brighton competitive long enough to mount their comeback.. It was a performance entirely consistent with her season as she currently leads the WSL in save percentage at 75 percent, tops the goals-prevented chart, and has six clean sheets to her name. City’s title celebrations will have to wait. Nnadozie made sure of that.
Nicolas Pépé (Ivory Coast) – Villarreal CF 2-1 RC Celta de Vigo
Pépé continues to remind Spanish football why he is still a force to be reckoned with. After Gerard Moreno opened the scoring from the penalty spot, the Ivorian doubled Villarreal’s advantage in the 28th minute, arriving onto a low cross from the left and finishing cleanly to put the tie firmly in their hands. Celta pulled one back to set up a tense finish, but Villarreal held on. Pépé’s goal proved the difference in a result that keeps their push for Champions League qualification firmly on track.
Tochukwu Nnadi (Nigeria)– Olympique de Marseille 1-1 OGC Nice
Three months after arriving from Zulte Waregem in a six million euro move, Tochukwu Nnadi finally got his first start for Marseille, and he seized it. The 22-year-old Super Eagles midfielder was handed the opportunity by coach Habib Beye in a high-stakes Ligue 1 fixture, and he repaid the trust with one of Marseille’s most influential individual displays of the day. Playing with composure and purpose for 80 minutes, Nnadi registered 69 touches, completed 85 percent of his passes, won six duels, and made four recoveries, before providing the decisive moment in the 66th minute, delivering a precise cross to the back post that Pierre-Emile Højbjerg headed home to give Marseille the lead. The result turned sour late as Nice converted a Panenka penalty through Elye Wahi in the 88th minute to deny Marseille all three points, a blow to their Champions League qualification hopes with three games remaining. But Nnadi’s performance gave Marseille fans something to be genuinely excited about. After months of waiting, he has arrived.
That’s it for this week’s Game Changers. See you next week.
