Game Changers of the Week

Another round of the Game Changers of the Week series is here, celebrating African players who delivered standout performances across Europe’s elite leagues. From spectacular solo efforts to derby day drama, here’s this week’s finest.

Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast) – Eintracht Frankfurt 1-3 RB Leipzig

The 19-year-old Ivorian sensation continued his breakout campaign with another mesmerising display at the Deutsche Bank Park, playing the full 90 minutes in Leipzig’s historic first-ever victory at Frankfurt’s fortress. Diomande opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a breathtaking solo effort, embarking on a mazy run that saw him glide past three defenders before curling a brilliant finish into the bottom corner. Beyond his opener, the teenager was relentless throughout, completing four of seven dribbles while creating three chances for teammates. He battled tirelessly, winning seven of 18 duels as Leipzig strengthened their Champions League qualification push. The strike marked his 12th Bundesliga goal of the season, making him the first teenager in recent league history to score four goals against Frankfurt in a single campaign.

Ademola Lookman (Nigeria) – Atlético Madrid 2-2 Real Sociedad (lost 4-3 on penalties)

The Nigerian forward delivered another big-game moment in the Copa del Rey final at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, though his efforts ultimately ended in heartbreak. After Real Sociedad stunned Atlético with the fastest Copa del Rey final goal ever, Lookman stepped up to restore parity in the 19th minute. Receiving a pass from Antoine Griezmann in the centre of the box, he smartly cut onto his left foot before sending a precise low strike through the legs of a defender and into the far bottom corner to make it 1-1.

His goal made him the first Super Eagles player to score in a Copa del Rey final since Finidi George in 1997, marking a historic achievement even as Atlético ultimately fell to Real Sociedad on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Nicolas Jackson (Senegal) – Bayern Munich 4-2 VfB Stuttgart

The Senegalese striker played a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title-clinching victory, operating for the full 90 minutes on a day of celebration at the Allianz Arena. After Stuttgart shocked the home crowd by taking the lead through Chris Führich in the 21st minute, Bayern responded with a devastating spell before halftime. Jackson scored Bayern’s crucial second goal in the 33rd minute during a six-minute burst that saw the champions score three times to completely turn the match around. The goal marked Jackson’s fifth in his last seven matches and took his Bundesliga tally to six goals in 19 appearances.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt) – Everton 1-2 Liverpool

Playing the full 90 minutes in his final Merseyside derby, the Egyptian King delivered one last reminder of his quality in this storied fixture. After Liverpool had been on the back foot during the opening exchanges against an energetic Everton side at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, Salah settled their nerves in the 29th minute with a moment of trademark brilliance. When Cody Gakpo pounced on a loose ball following a defensive mistake and delivered a perfectly weighted assist, Salah showcased the clinical edge that has defined his Anfield career, slotting home a calm first-time finish to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead. The goal was historic on multiple fronts; it made him the first Liverpool player to score at Everton’s new stadium while also drawing him level with Steven Gerrard on nine Merseyside derby goals in the Premier League era, a record Salah achieved in just 15 appearances compared to Gerrard’s 30. With three goals in his last three Premier League starts, the 33-year-old’s improved form has come at the perfect time as he prepares to bid farewell to Anfield at season’s end.

That’s it for this week’s Game Changers. See you next week.
