Zorah Mhembe Ijuh on her Introspective solo Exhibition “Reflections of Self Art”

June 8, 2024 marked the opening of “Reflections of Self Art,” an eagerly anticipated solo exhibition by Zorah Mhembe Ijuh, known to many simply as Zo. As the creative director for A Tribe Called Zo, she presented a multidisciplinary showcase that was both visually and emotionally compelling.

Zo described the exhibition as an avenue where art served as a reflective tool, inviting the audience to explore their inner selves. “Reflections of Self Art was about delving back into oneself and seeing from another perspective,” she explained. “I invited everyone to come on a journey of self-discovery with me… exploring where I’ve come from, where I am now, and where I’ll be in the future.

Primarily focused on abstract art, Zo also integrates statement fashion pieces and photography into her work, “I like to merge my other art forms with painting; it really gives life to the works. In this exhibition, I’ve merged art, photography, and fashion,” she noted.

This decision to blend multiple disciplines stems from an inherent inability to limit herself to just one form of expression. Zo has always struggled to do just one thing because she excels in many areas. Unable to choose one, she decided to merge all her talents into a cohesive whole.

Zo’s journey to her first solo exhibition was one of both challenge and triumph. “This was my first solo exhibition,” she shared with excitement.

Among her inspirations, Leonardo da Vinci is top of the list, but it is her artist friends, Caesar and Mr. Waddud, who continually fuel her creativity. “I see them create mind-blowing artistic pieces, and it just does something to my brain. How I grew up has also inspired me a great deal as an artist.

When asked to describe what she hoped the audience took away in one word, she simply said, “Essence.” According to her, art brings people into a certain consciousness, opening up their senses to perceive life differently. This heightened perception, often in colors and textures, reveals the essence of everything.

As she prepared to unveil her work, Zo remained modest yet inviting. “I’m still getting used to it, so I’ll just invite everyone to come on this journey with me as we unravel the beauty that lies in the universe through art.

Reflections of Self Art” provided a personal glimpse into the mind of a talented multidisciplinary artist. The exhibition took place at 35 on 4th – Top Floor, Manhattan Mall II, 35 4th Avenue, Gwarinpa, FCT.
