Tems Wins Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammys, Keeping the Award in Women’s Hands

At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards held on February 2, 2025, Nigerian singer Tems took home the award for Best African Music Performance with her song Love Me JeJe. This marks the second time the category has been awarded, following its introduction in 2024. Notably, both winners so far have been women, with South African artist Tyla winning the inaugural award last year for Water.

Tems triumphed in a competitive category, beating out fellow nominees Yemi Alade (Tomorrow), Asake & Wizkid (MMS), Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay (Sensational), and Burna Boy (Higher).

In her acceptance speech, Tems dedicated the win to her mother, whose birthday coincided with the ceremony and her team.

The Best African Music Performance category was introduced by the Recording Academy in 2024 to recognize recordings that showcase the diverse sounds of the African continent, celebrating its unique melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic traditions.

This Grammy win adds to Tems’ growing list of accolades, including her 2023 victory for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her contribution to Future’s Wait for U, making it two Grammys in her trophy cabinet in less than a decade. Despite her relatively short career span.
