Super Eagles Legend Peter Rufai Dies at 61

Nigerian football legend Peter Rufai has died at the age of 61, according to Radio Nigeria. He reportedly passed away on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness. While the family has yet to confirm officially, a Lagos State official verified the news.

Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football, famously guarding the posts during the country’s golden era. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory and represented the nation at two FIFA World Cups—USA ’94 and France ’98. Over his illustrious international career, he earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles.

Known affectionately as “Dodo Mayana,” a nod to his royal heritage, Rufai was celebrated not only for his on-field brilliance but also for his leadership and mentorship. His club career spanned Europe, with stints in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

Post-retirement, he ran the Staruf Academy, mentoring young talents.

May he rest in peace.
