Shippy Shen’s Share Session: Exploring Personal Stories, Philosophy, and Genuine Connection
Shippy Shen Share Session is an unconventional podcast from Lagos, hosted by Lanre “Shippy” Shenayon. What makes this show stand out is its lack of a niche—each episode touches on different themes, making it a podcast about “everything and nothing at the same time.” Shippy describes it as unscripted and unpredictable, with the content flowing naturally as conversations unfold. This openness makes the show feel raw and genuine, often diving into deeply personal topics like anxiety, loss, and closure from past relationships.
When asked how he navigates sensitive topics, Shippy shared that the goal is to help listeners feel less alone. He believes that opening up makes it easier for others to do the same, creating a space of connection through shared experiences. “If you open up to someone, it makes it easier for them to open up to you,” he says, stressing that these conversations can make listeners feel understood in their struggles.
After a year-long hiatus, Shippy is back with a renewed focus on consistency, though he admits his break was due to being in his head about how he was perceived. Now, he’s determined to keep going for his listeners, even joking that he owes it to his “two listeners” to maintain regular episodes. Shippy is also excited about the new guests lined up for the future, mentioning that he’d love to feature dream guests like Duncan Trussell. He also mentioned being greatly inspired by the late philosopher Alan Watts, known for interpreting and popularizing Buddhism in Western culture, whose work inspired him to start Shippy Shen Share Session. For Shippy, the ultimate goal is simple: to create a podcast that not only entertains but also brings people together through shared stories and perspectives.
What is “Shippy Shen Share Session” about?
Shippy: There’s no true niche to it; it’s about everything and nothing at the same time. Every episode is different, so there’s something for everyone.
What differentiates this from any other podcast?
Shippy: Hmm… Well, I think not having a niche leaves what we talk about up in the air, so it’s not scripted… Not that other podcasts are scripted or anything, but even I’m not sure where the podcast is going once I hit record.
The podcast touches on personal topics like anxiety, loss of loved ones, and even closure from exes. How do you approach handling sensitive topics?
Shippy: Everyone goes through the same things in life, more or less, but not everyone talks about it, you know? If you open up to someone, it makes it easier for them to open up to you. I just think about the listeners hearing it and knowing they’re a little less alone than they were before.
Who is a dream guest you’d love to have on your podcast right now?
Shippy: Hmm… Can I say Alan Watts? If you’re not including dead people, then maybe Duncan Trussell… He’s probably the reason I got into podcasts in the first place.
Is there any similarity between the two of them?
Shippy: Well… Alan Watts brought Buddhism to the Western world. He’s like a philosopher, while Duncan is a student, like we all are.
Do you hope to engage in more conversations about achieving a higher self and enlightenment?
Shippy: I do… I think at the core, I want Share Sesh to be philosophical, but I’m not forcing it. Whatever happens, happens.
That’s great and actually something not really popular, but I feel it’s important.
Shippy: Right?! Maybe that’s what makes it different from other podcasts.
Yes, that’s why I feel it’s important we had this conversation. Would you have more artists on the pod?
Shippy: I would… I’m always open to learning.
After a year-long hiatus, what caused the long break, and what prompted you to bring the podcast back? What can listeners expect this time around?
Shippy: Well, I think the hiatus came up because I was in my head about a lot of things. It’s very counterproductive to run a podcast but also have a fear of being perceived. One day, I just said, “F*CK IT” and uploaded it. People really don’t care whether you’re “mysterious” online or not, so post whatever you’d like… I’m still trying to take my own advice, but in time, I guess.
With the podcast coming back, are there any changes or new segments your audience can expect?
Shippy: Wow, I thought it was pretty good already. Do you want me to change something?
Haha, no, it is, but people always expect something new or more exciting after a long hiatus.
Shippy: Well, you know, new guests. I’m really excited about the guests. I’m also adding music at the end of each episode. Smaller artists, you know? To create awareness and such.
What has been the most memorable guest or conversation so far, and why?
Shippy: Definitely the one I had with Chuks—the Uber driver. It’s not every day someone says they’re well-versed in the mystic arts and actually believes it.
Do you have any particular goals or milestones you’re hoping to achieve now that you’re back on air?
Shippy: Well, I’m just trying to achieve a level of consistency, you know? I think I owe it to the two listeners I have! Haha… I’m trying, I promise.
What are your favorite reactions or feedback from listeners since you started?
Shippy: One of my favorite things so far was meeting people in real life who listen to the podcast. It kind of made me feel like I’m actually doing something, you know?
Last question: What’s the one thing you hope to achieve through this?
Shippy: I mean, I wanted to make the type of podcast that I would listen to and basically share experiences and other people’s stories, just so we all feel a little less alone than we were before, knowing that we’re all going through the same things together… Hence the name, Share Session.
Shippy is creating a platform for open conversation, thoughtful reflection, and shared human experiences. With each episode, Shippy brings something new to the table, from deep philosophical discussions to personal anecdotes, making listeners feel a little less alone in their journey.
