The 98th edition of the Academy Awards wrapped up on Sunday night, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerging as the night’s biggest winner with six awards.
As One Battle After Another dominated the night with the most awards, Sinners was not far behind. Coming into the ceremony with a leading 16 nominations, the film held its own, walking away with four major wins. Michael B. Jordan took home Best Actor — his first-ever Oscar — while director Ryan Coogler earned Best Original Screenplay, also his first. The film also won Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, a historic victory that saw Autumn Durald Arkapaw become the first woman ever to win in the category.
The pack leader, One Battle After Another secured Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson while also picking up Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Film Editing, becoming the most decorated film of the night.
In the Best Actress category, Jessie Buckley clinched the award for her role in Hamnet, while Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons.
Elsewhere, Frankenstein dominated the technical categories, taking home Oscars for Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Animated feature KPop Demon Hunters won both Best Animated Film and Best Original Song, while Sentimental Value secured the Best International Feature award.
Sports drama F1 — starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris — also had its moment on the night, taking home the Oscar for Best Sound after entering the ceremony with multiple nominations including Best Picture.
The documentary category also delivered a politically charged moment, with Mr. Nobody Against Putin winning Best Documentary Feature.
Overall, the night reflected a strong showing for auteur-driven filmmaking and ambitious storytelling, with One Battle After Another and Sinners standing out as the defining films of this year’s awards season.
