Notes Mastermind: Tay Iwar

Tay Iwar is a Nigerian Afrobeat and neo-soul artist known for his exceptional songwriting skills. He has a unique musical journey that began in his early childhood when his father introduced him to classic piano lessons. By the age of 13, he had developed a deep passion for creating music and had become proficient in various aspects of music and the production process. This love for music inspired him to co-found the “Bantu Collective” alongside his brothers, Sute and Terna Iwar.

Tay Iwar is particularly renowned for his songwriting prowess. In his own words, as mentioned on okayafrica:

“When it comes to music creation and the expression of emotion, yes. I feel like I have worked hard to be able to do that at a professional level. If being professional is considered genius, then yes. However, the term ‘genius’ is often subjective, and people use it subjectively. You might connect with someone on a deep level, and it might not necessarily mean they are a genius; it just means you’re on the same wavelength with them at that given moment. But I am proficient in many aspects of music. I mix, record, produce, write songs, play instruments, and even master songs.”

Tay Iwar has also contributed his songwriting and production skills to notable artists, including:

Wizkid:

  • “Frames” (Composer, Lyricist)
  • “Deep” (Composer, Lyricist, Backup)
  • “Steady” (Composer, Lyricist)

Dave:

  • “System” (Composer, Lyricist)

Burna Boy:

  • “Alone” (Writer and Producer)

When it comes to his inspiration for songwriting, Tay Iwar expresses that his primary source of motivation is his emotions. He believes that emotions are the most powerful force in the world and play a crucial role in the music industry. He creates songs to express himself and to connect with others who can relate to his stories. He strives to articulate emotions in a way that resonates with people, even without using explicit words. He believes that by tapping into universal emotions, he can make listeners feel deeply connected to his music.
