Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, opened their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign with a sensational 75-62 victory over World No. 3, Australia, at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille.
Despite a strong start by Australia, who led by six points early on, Nigeria quickly turned the tide. Ezinne Kalu hit a deep three-pointer to close the gap, and by the end of the first quarter, Nigeria had taken an 18-17 lead.
In the second quarter, D’Tigress extended their lead. Kalu’s impressive four-point play and Amy Okonkwo’s three-pointer were highlights as Nigeria outscored Australia 23-11, ending the half with a 13-point lead and 10 steals.
Australia mounted a comeback in the third quarter, narrowing the gap with a 12-4 run. Despite this, Nigeria’s defense remained strong, and they entered the final quarter with a five-point advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Murjanatu Musa’s three-pointer and Okonkwo’s crucial shot helped Nigeria regain control. With additional free throws, D’Tigress sealed the game with a 75-62 victory, marking their first win at the Paris Olympics.
Ezinne Kalu led the scoring with 19 points, grabbing five rebounds, and making five assists and three steals. Australia’s 26 turnovers, which led to 26 points for Nigeria, were a significant factor in the game.
This win is Nigeria’s second in the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, following a victory over South Korea in 2004.
“We stuck together and came together in adversity. This is what it is all about – you fight,” said Nigeria forward Amy Okonkwo after the game.
Nigeria will face France in their next game as they will no doubt aim to build on this historic win and continue their Olympic journey.
