Kenya’s Ezra Kering and Ethiopia’s Dinke Meleka claimed top honours at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, February 14, as the prestigious race once again attracted elite international athletes and thousands of runners to Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Kering dominated the men’s elite race, clocking 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 55 seconds to claim the $50,000 first prize. The 40-year-old veteran showed remarkable consistency, shaving time off his recent performances on the international circuit.
Uganda’s Samuel Lomoi finished a close second in 2:11:59, while his compatriot Lumbasi Namutala secured third place with a time of 2:12:25.
In the women’s category, Meleka captured her second Lagos City Marathon title with a winning time of 2:37:36, demonstrating her enduring prowess in long-distance running.
Nigerian athletes delivered strong performances on home soil, with Nyango Boyi emerging as the fastest local male finisher. He completed the demanding course in 2:25:32, showcasing the growing strength of domestic distance running. Deborah Badung made her mark as the first Nigerian woman across the finish line, recording a time of 2:55:46.

The event drew over 25,000 participants, continuing the marathon’s growth trajectory. Running under the theme “New Steps, Fresh Goals,” the 2026 edition reinforced the race’s position as a premier sporting event in West Africa.
The marathon holds World Athletics Gold Label status, placing it among the most prestigious marathons worldwide and attracting elite international athletes alongside thousands of recreational runners.
