Just before Rema took the stage at Benin City’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium last Friday, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, reflected on the creative spirit that defines Edo’s people. “We are innovators, creators, and designers,” he said, adding that despite tough times, Edo’s youth—like Rema—will find success.

Rema’s rise since 2019, driven by a fresh take on Afrobeats and propelled by global hits like “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez, has made him a symbol of pride for his home city. Despite his international stardom, Rema has kept Benin at the heart of his work, most notably in his 2023 O2 Arena show, which paid homage to Benin’s rich history. His latest album, HEIS, continues this trend, with references to his hometown and a collaboration with fellow Benin artist, Shallipopi, on “BENIN BOYS.”

Rema’s much-anticipated homecoming concert became a cultural and economic boost for Benin City. The influx of visitors led to a surge in commercial activity, with cab drivers, hotels, and local businesses benefiting from the event. As part of his return, Rema visited the Oba of Benin, received recognition as a cultural ambassador, and donated N105 million to local churches.

The concert itself was a celebration of Benin’s creative talents. Rema shared the stage with rising artists and stars like Odumodublvck and Shallipopi, while Mavin Records acts, including Magixx, Ladipoe, and Crayon, thrilled the crowd. Beyond the immediate success, Rema’s homecoming marked the beginning of a new era for Edo’s entertainment industry, as he joined Governor Obaseki in breaking ground for a new arena—Rema’s Dome.

At the heart of it all, Rema delivered a powerful message to his hometown: “Keep moving, keep believing, no matter how crazy the dream might be.” His homecoming wasn’t just a concert—it was a moment of shared pride and renewed self-belief for Benin City.
