Game Changers of the Week

It’s week three of the Game Changers of the Week series, spotlighting African players doing bits in Europe’s major leagues. From match-winning goals to assists, we’ve got you covered on the continent’s finest.

Serhou Guirassy – Borussia Dortmund (Guinea)

It’s now four goals in three games for Serhou Guirassy to kick off the season, with three coming in two Bundesliga outings. Against Union Berlin on Sunday, he scored a brace to lead Dortmund to a comfortable 3-0 win. The first was a classic striker’s finish, eyes fixed on the ball, but the second was pure beauty, a deft touch for a 1-2 with Max Beier, a clever run into space, and a calm chip over the goalkeeper. Currently, there aren’t many strikers in Europe as lethal as Guirassy.

Bryan Mbeumo – Manchester United (Cameroon)

Bryan Mbeumo is up and running in the Premier League for Manchester United, grabbing a goal and delivering an impressive performance in their 3-2 win over Burnley. He was at the heart of everything good for United, registering three shots and creating five chances. The movement for his goal was especially delightful to watch. That makes it back-to-back goals for the Cameroonian as he settles into life with the Red Devils.

Moses Simon – Paris FC (Nigeria)

It was a goal and an assist for Moses Simon as he continued his bright start at Paris FC. In the 52nd minute, he delivered a pinpoint cross to Illan Kebbal at the back post to give his side the lead, before scoring himself on a fast break to restore the advantage after Metz had equalised. After six seasons at Nantes, Simon already looks at home in the French capital.

Ismaila Sarr – Crystal Palace (Senegal)

Last week, I mentioned how Palace needed someone to step up in Eze’s absence, and Sarr has delivered as he has been doing for a while now. That’s now two goals in two games for the Senegalese winger. Against Aston Villa, he sealed the three points with a back-post header, wrapping up a 3-1 victory for Oliver Glasner’s side. He did, however, pick up a knock late on, and Palace fans will be hoping it’s nothing too serious.

Victor Osimhen – Galatasaray (Nigeria)

Victor Osimhen was a regular feature in this Game Changers series last season, and he’s back on the board again. The striker scored Galatasaray’s second goal in their 3-1 win over Rizespor, making it two goals in two games for the lethal Nigerian forward.
