Game Changers of the Week

It’s week two of the Game Changers of the Week series, spotlighting African players doing bits in Europe’s major leagues. From goals to assists to record-setting moments, we’ve got you covered on the continent’s finest.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille, Gabon)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in Europe with a bang. At 36 years old, the Gabonese is showing he still has it, bagging a well-taken brace in Marseille’s 5-2 win vs Paris FC. He won a penalty in the 18th minute before scoring himself, being in the right place to tap in from a corner six minutes later. In the second half, he profited from good pressing by Bilal Nadir to finish first time past goalkeeper Obed Nkambadio. A lot is expected from Marseille this season, and Aubameyang is proving he still has plenty to offer Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Nicolas Pépé (Villarreal, Ivory Coast)

When you hear Nicolas Pépé, you probably think “Arsenal flop.” That’s another story. The Ivorian has quietly gotten his act together at Villarreal, opening the scoring in their 5-0 demolition of Girona. Reacting first to a loose ball, he drove into the box and finished calmly with his left foot past Vladyslav Krapyvtsov. With a goal and an assist already in two games for Villarreal, Pépé looks ready to carry on this good form.

Iliman Ndiaye (Everton, Senegal)

Iliman Ndiaye made history for Everton last season by scoring the last goal at their former home, Goodison Park. In their first match at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, guess who wrote his name in history again? Ndiaye. He finished neatly from a Jack Grealish cross to set Everton on their way to a 2-0 win against Brighton.

Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace, Senegal)

With Eberechi Eze leaving for Arsenal, Crystal Palace needed someone to step up — and Ismaila Sarr said, “Say less.” He opened the scoring in their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. Even after Palace sign an Eze replacement, Sarr looks set to carry a heavy load for the FA Cup and Community Shield winners this season.

Dango Ouattara (Brentford, Burkina Faso)

Dango Ouattara completed his £37.5m move to Brentford from Bournemouth and wasted no time making an impact, scoring the winner against Aston Villa. Latching on to a through ball, he missed his first chance but kept his composure to fire home the rebound, giving new manager Keith Andrews his first Premier League points. No Mbeumo, no Wissa, no problem.

That’s it for this week’s Game Changers. See you next week.
