Emilia Pérez Leads 2025 Oscars with 13 Nominations
The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, with Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón), leading the pack with 13 nominations—the highest ever for a non-English language film.
This groundbreaking narco-musical, available on Netflix, delves into themes of trans identity and has earned nods in major categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. Notably, Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s lead, has made history as the first openly trans actor to receive an Oscar nomination.
Trailing closely behind, both “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” have secured 10 nominations each.
The announcement of the nominations was delayed due to devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Despite calls to cancel the Oscars, academy leaders have decided to proceed with the ceremony, scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre. The event, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will include special tributes to first responders and acknowledge the impact of the fires on the community.
