Breakfast in Lagos: The Embodiment of a work of art
In addition to being an integral member of the Native Sound system, Sholz is a DJ and producer. Native Sound System’s first album, Nativeworld, which he produced, became an overnight sensation in the Alte scene.
A career-long bridge-builder, Sholz has helped bring Nigeria and her diaspora closer together. In 2019, he debuted NATIVE Sound System as a CO-DJ, and last year in 2022, he negotiated a groundbreaking joint venture contract with DefJam Recordings for the new enterprise NATIVE Records. He co-founded The NATIVE Networks in 2016. Sholz debuted as a musician with a superb two-pack release, “Cruel Love” with Somadina and Tar1q, and “Vex” with Teezee, Odumodublvck, and Candy Bleakz, adding to his impressive and varied production history and commendable accomplishments as a rising music executive.
By consistently challenging conventional wisdom in the realm of sound, Sholz has redefined what listeners value most in African music. With nine songs and fourteen musicians included, his first mixtape, “Breakfast in Lagos,” is spectacular.
“Ifesinachi,” featuring Antiworld gangsters, Odumodublvck, Agunna, Sugarbana, and Patty Yo, is the second track on the mixtape after “Precaution.” Odumodublvck began the song by delivering his incredible lyrics, which included: “Ifesinachi she no I came from God; Ifesinachi she no dey pick my call; because I don dey puff; she calls me big bum bum; Ghana girl o make she go pick my call,” and Antiworld Gangsters, who kept the beat and transported the listeners to a state of pure bliss. Beautiful melodies that will leave listeners seeking more were incorporated into the music by Agunna, Sugarbana, and Patty Yo.
The next song is “Pattern Gang” (Extended Album Version) from the mixtape. This magical and outstanding track displays the skill of Sholz and contains an outstanding roster of award-winning musicians. Smada, Odumodublvck, and Teezee all bring something special to the table with their searing verses that amp up the track’s intensity and depth. The original song, released in September, grabbed listeners with its distinctive sound, which was created by blending numerous genres. The expanded version adds a spoken word accusing them of being terrible boys for neglecting her.
“Still Standing” follows the legendary “Pattern Gang” which was a hit on the mixtape. Two incredible artists with distinctive vocals, Mannywellz and Teni, are featured on the record. They annihilated the song because its harmony is so powerful; it’s fascinating, the rhythm hypnotizes you, and the words make you want to dance.
With a gentle introduction and a calming voice, “Irrational” entices listeners. With his chameleon-like ability to merge genres, Tar1q enhanced Valentino Rose’s beauty with Neo-Afro. His soprano voice, like Valentino Rose’s, tells a moving narrative.
Another track on Sholz’s tape, “Vex Interlude,” is nothing more than a collection of words.
“Words cannot express the utmost tenderness of Time Alone,” which includes Pdstrn and Reeplay. By harmonizing his rapping and singing, Pdstrn elevates his baritone voice to a new level. By sticking to the norm, Reeplay helps his musical style thrive, and his words win over listeners’ hearts.
“Firewood,” featuring Odumodublvck and Valentino Rose, is the eighth track on the mixtape. With his stunning voice, Valentino Rose transports listeners on a mesmerizing voyage, while Odumodublvck elevates the experience with his vulgar lyrics.
“After I knack her she said Odumodu can you help me with transport, you no get Papa? After I service your puna I no hear congrats.” These lyrics would cause controversies among listeners who disagree with his opinion but in time they will understand, he assured them Odumodu na me they cancel they con still crown me king during an interview with Fumez the Engineer.
“Man Down” is the mixtape’s closing track, and features DETO BLACK and Smada. The two artists’ diverse musical backgrounds complement and resonate with one another, resulting in a track that’s jam-packed with energy and enthusiasm. Fans will love this song because it leaves a lasting impression.
Breakfast in Lagos is an iconic mixtape that will be around for a long time because of the mixtape’s distinctive quality which is being able to please all listeners.
