Tems Delivers a Soul-Stirring Masterpiece with “Born in the Wild”

It’s been over four years since Tems’ debut and the release of her breakout single Mr. Rebel, Tems has shown nothing but growth, expanding across borders and becoming a force in the global music industry. Multiple EPs, singles, a #1 Billboard hit, and a Grammy later, fans were left yearning for more.

An artist usually considers releasing an album after such a successful run, and it seemed like the next step for Tems. While we weren’t certain if Tems was heading in that direction, at least if you asked me earlier this year, one thing was clear: whenever we hear about it, we anticipated something really special.

In April 2024, Tems finally announced an upcoming body of work titled Born in the Wild. This highly anticipated album sparked debates among fans and critics about her ability to deliver a full body of work four years into her remarkable career. The debate didn’t last long before she introduced a smashing single off the album called Love Me Jeje in April. May passed, and finally, on June 6th, Tems unveiled her first album and magnum opus, Born in the Wild. This album is a stunning showcase of R&B/Soul.

From the opener Born in the Wild, her voice immediately captures your attention, wrapping you in its warmth and depth. You can’t help but want to get lost in her velvety embrace. Her voice definitely makes you feel.

Track 2 – Special Baby (Interlude) showcases Tems’ vulnerability as she confronts the criticisms and negativity from the public. Despite these harsh words and skepticism, Tems remains resilient, refusing to back down. The interlude is particularly poignant as it features her mother offering kind words of encouragement, reinforcing Tems’ strength and determination.

On the next track – Burning, this is R&B at its peak. Tems effortlessly floats through the music. This is her zone, it’s second nature to her. This flow comes to her easily. This is a record you’ll definitely recommend to a new listener.

Track 4 – Wickedest features Tems sampling the hit record Premiere Gaou by Magic System. On this track, Tems exudes a sense of freedom and joy. Her infectious bounce compels you to move your feet and dance. The production by GuiltyBeatz is stellar.

Love me jeje which is the next track is a perfect continuation from Wickedest. This is the song for couples. ‘Love me jeje, love me tender‘ which is a combination of English and Nigerian pidgin and which means ‘Love me gently, love me tenderly,‘ this track emphasizes a desire for a soft, affectionate, and considerate kind of love.

The next track, Get it Right, with heavyweight hit-maker Asake. As soon as you hear those drums, you immediately think of Asake, and Tems did a fantastic job bringing him on board. Their blend is top-notch, Sarz killed the beat, both artists complemented each other perfectly. This track is a summer beach or pool party hit, guaranteed to get everyone moving and enjoying the vibes.

Ready is the type of vibe Tems dominates. That emotive singing with her lyrics that depict a journey of personal growth and empowerment. With the light in my soul / I’m letting it show / Darling, I won’t hide anymore. She sings in the chorus.

On Gangsta, Tems channels a fierce and confident vibe, expressing her readiness to face challenges and asserting her uniqueness. The song begins with her declaring her determination: I’m makin’ moves, see, you see, yeah / They all wanna do this, do this. She acknowledges the scrutiny she faces but remains resolute, prepared to defend her space.

Tracks 9 and 10, Unfortunate and Boy o Boy, are R&B/Pop/Soul hits that perfectly represent what makes Tems unique and allows her to shine. Both tracks showcase her ability to dominate soulful melodies, highlighting her mastery at capturing the depth of her emotions.

The next track, Forever, sees Tems sounding like the second coming of Michael Jackson. The pop drums and snare are evident, creating a classic yet fresh vibe. Her powerful vocals and impeccable production make this an amazing track.

Free Fall, featuring J. Cole, one of the most anticipated tracks on the album, doesn’t disappoint. The guitar at the beginning immediately sets the mood. J. Cole and Tems form a beautiful partnership. The production is top-notch too.

Dancehall vibes come in with Turn It Up, featuring an interpolation of Fela’s Sorry Sorry beat, produced by the genius London.” This infusion adds a unique flavor to the track. London’s production perfectly complements Tems’ vocals, resulting in a standout moment on the album.

On T-Unit, Tems is rapping. Yes, you heard that right! You would’ve taken her as a member of Wu-Tang. Tems is as good a rapper as she is a singer? It’s unexpected but proves that Tems is a versatile artist, capable of exploring different genres and styles.

You in My Face is a song that you would love to hear performed live. Tems’ voice is so powerful and captivating. The lyrics of You in My Face express introspection and self-reflection, also a sense of confrontation and close examination. The song explores themes of self-awareness, resilience, and the enduring power of love.

The final track Hold On, Tems delivers an important message. Her words in the song convey a message of perseverance and strength. This song is perfect to listen to all day while going through day-to-day life struggles. “Hold On,” as she sings, is a repeated plea and reassuring mantra to stay strong and not give up.

Tems’ Born in the Wild is undoubtedly a statement album for those who had any doubts. Each track offers something unique, her versatility shines while still maintaining her original self. Her voice sounds even better than before, and the production quality is top-notch.
