NFF Appoints Finidi George as New Super Eagles Head Coach
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.
A statement released on Monday reads “The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.”
Finidi George served as an assistant coach under the outgoing José Santos Peseiro for 20 months. His interim stint as Head Coach saw him take charge of the team after Peseiro’s departure, during which he oversaw two friendly matches in Morocco last month.
Notably, George guided the Super Eagles to a 2-1 victory against Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak, before facing a 0-2 loss to Mali.
Finidi George, renowned for his legendary wing play, was pivotal member of the Eagles squad in his playing days, contributed to Nigeria’s triumph in the 1994 AFCON and played a vital role in the country’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup that same year.
His illustrious career extended beyond national borders, culminating in victory in the 1995 UEFA Champions League with Ajax,
Upon retiring from professional football in 2004, Finidi embarked on a new journey in coaching, earning a UEFA A Coaching Licence. This qualification opened doors for him in La Liga, where he held roles as director of international football at Real Betis and youth team coach at Real Mallorca, showcasing his expertise and dedication to nurturing young talent.
In 2021, Finidi returned to Nigeria, joining Enyimba FC, where he made an immediate impact, playing a pivotal role in guiding the club to its ninth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in 2023.
