Stuff of Dreams: LeBron and Bronny Are Writing Something New in the Playoffs

The Los Angeles Lakers hold a 3-0 series lead over the Houston Rockets. LeBron James is averaging nearly 40 minutes per game at 41 years old, putting up 23.5 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds. The records keep falling. But the story of this postseason isn’t just what LeBron is doing, it’s what he and his son, Bronny, are doing together.

In Game 3, LeBron spotted Bronny running the fast break, made eye contact, and threw the lob. Bronny caught it and finished with a reverse layup, the NBA’s first-ever father-son alley-oop in a playoff game. Moments earlier, LeBron had set a screen to free up Bronny for his first career playoff three-pointer.

After the game, a 112-108 overtime win, LeBron could barely contain himself. “He was calling for it. I’ve seen his steps for so long. He was gathering. I was just like, go get it.” Bronny, for his part, sounded like a son who has been waiting for this his whole life. “I’m not sure when was the last time I got an oop from him was, probably in training camp. It was just one of those things. He saw me, saw that I was making eye contact, so he threw it up. I can always go get it.”

This is already a postseason full of history. LeBron and Bronny became the first father and son to play together in a playoff game. They have now combined for the first father-son assist in playoff history and the first father-son alley-oop. Earlier in the regular season, they had already recorded the first father-son assists in NBA history, full stop.

LeBron James has 184 playoff wins, more than any player ever. He has 8,289 playoff points, more than any player ever. He is in his 19th postseason, matching Karl Malone and John Stockton for the most in history. The record book has been his for years.

But Game 3 against Houston gave him something a box score can’t capture,  an alley-oop to his son, in the playoffs, with the crowd going wild. He threw it up. Bronny went and got it.

Stuff of dreams.
