Two of Nigeria’s street pop frontrunners, Shallipopi and Seyi Vibez, have officially released their first projects under their own record labels following disputes with their former label, Dapper Music.
Shallipopi has released his latest single, Laho, marking his first official release under his independent label, Plutomania Records. Meanwhile, Seyi Vibez has dropped a surprise EP, Children of Africa, as his first release under NSNV INC., his newly formed imprint. Both artists’ decisions to go independent stem from contractual disagreements and financial disputes with Dapper Music, which eventually led to their departure.
The move to independence is a significant step for both artists, allowing them greater creative and financial control over their music. For Seyi Vibez and Shallipopi, the transition also comes with a strategic business move, as they secured a distribution deal with Empire and RCA UK respectively, the global distribution and record label services companies known for working with top African artists.
