Kendrick Lamar Shows Up in a “Canadian Tuxedo” to Accept Record of the Year for Not Like Us
Kendrick Lamar has always been a master of making statements, a literal walking metaphor—whether through his music, his visuals, or even his fashion. Last night, at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, he did all three at once. The Compton rapper pulled up in a full Canadian tuxedo—see meaning here—just in time to collect his fifth Grammy of the night, securing Record of the Year for his scathing diss track to Drake, Not Like Us.
The track, produced by Mustard, became an instant anthem upon release, fueling one of the most talked-about rap battles in recent history.
Winning Record of the Year with a HipHop/Rap song is no small feat marking only the third time in Grammy history that the genre has claimed this, but for Kendrick, it was just another accolade in an already dominant night. Having already picked up four Grammys before stepping on stage—including Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song—his Not Like Us win cemented his reign and also his triumph in one of the most fierce battles in recent history.
“We’re dedicating this to the city—Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood out to the Valley, San Bernardino. This is my neck of the woods, the place that’s had my back since I was a young pup. I was in the studio, scraping, writing the best raps so I could do records like this. I can’t give enough thanks to the places I’ve rode in and the people that’ve held me down since high school.” Kendrick said in his acceptance speech.
